Plein Air Oil Painting on the Grassland: Process, Inspiration and Landscape Studies

This series was created during a plein air painting trip in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia in 2024.

Plein air oil painting allows artists to directly engage with nature, capturing light, atmosphere, and space in a way that studio work cannot fully replicate.

where vast landscapes, changing weather, and natural light became the core inspiration behind each work.

This plein air oil painting series focuses on capturing natural light, color relationships, and spatial depth in a real outdoor environment.

The Landscape & EnvironmentThe grassland offered me an open and expansive visual experience. The endless horizon, moving clouds, and subtle color variations create a dynamic and ever-changing environment.

Painting in such a setting is both challenging and inspiring. The scale of the landscape forces simplification, while the light constantly shifts, requiring quick observation and decision-making.

In this plein air oil painting process, working outdoors requires quick observation and strong decision-making.

In this oil painting process, working outdoors means responding directly to nature. Light changes quickly, colors shift subtly, and compositions must be established efficiently.

Each painting session usually begins with blocking in large shapes, followed by refining color relationships and adjusting tonal balance. The goal is not to copy every detail, but to capture the essence of the landscape.

Weather, wind, and time constraints all become part of the creative process, making each painting a unique response to a specific moment.

These landscape oil paintings created en plein air reflect direct observation of nature.

These plein air oil paintings explore the relationship between space, light, and color in the natural landscape.

Rather than focusing on fine detail, the works emphasize atmosphere, structure, and the rhythm of the land. Brushwork remains visible, allowing the painting process itself to become part of the final image.

This makes each painting a response not only to the landscape, but to time itself.

Through this plein air painting experience, I continue to explore how nature can be translated into simplified forms, color relationships, and expressive brushwork.

For me, painting outdoors is not only about capturing a place, but also about understanding how we see, feel, and respond to the world around us.
